Doug and Leah Johnson saw an ad about a $1 house for sale in Italy. The price seemed so ridiculous to them that they called the manager and actually bought the house. However, three years later, the family calculated the real costs, and at the same time showed the result of the extensive renovation.

Additional expenses arose at the stage of the transaction. The house was formally sold for $1 – this is how the Italian authorities attract visitors to remote and almost abandoned villages. The obligation to fully restore the house was imposed on the buyer. All the paperwork and permission for repairs cost Dag and Leah another $13,000.

The two-roomed, high ceiling house is located on the outskirts of the village of Vasanello, which has a population of barely 4,000. It took the couple a lot of effort to restore it. The floor was completely rotten and the ceiling had to be replaced along with the rafters.

The family tried to preserve the spirit of the old building, which dates back to the 15th century. The work took three years, but Doug and Leah are quite happy with the result.

"The purchase with all the paperwork cost us $15,000. The renovation cost $75,000. Of course, it was a little more than advertised," Doug explained.
