Returning home from work on Jan. 21, Dianne Gordon stopped at a local BP gas station for a snack when she spotted a ziplock bag left near the entrance. There was a large amount of cash in it.

The first thing that flashed through her mind was:

"This doesn't belong to me, I have to call the police," Gordon told Fox 2 Detroit. The bag bore no name, but it did contain some wedding cards.

"That's how we found out they were gifts from a wedding that took place that day," said White Lake Police Lieutenant Matthew Ivory.

After learning that Gordon had to walk four miles to and from work since her car broke down more than a year ago, the wife of a police officer started a fundraiser on GoFundMe to help the woman get a new car.

Shortly thereafter, White Lake police dep announced on social media that they had teamed up with Szott Automotive Group to give Gordon the opportunity to purchase a new car if enough funds were raised. The announcement was widely publicized.

As of Feb. 11, more than $82,000 had been donated to help Gordon, far beyond the original goal of $25,000. An update posted on the GoFundMe page Feb. 8 thanked everyone for their "overwhelming" support.

While Dianne says she doesn't mind walking a long distance to work, she regrets that she can't see her family members as often as she would like after losing her car.

"My grandson is 13 and plays hockey. And my granddaughter is 11 and does gymnastics, and I haven't seen him play hockey and her do gymnastics yet. So it would mean a lot to me to see them do it," the woman told Detroit's WXYZ. "It means a lot to me. I miss them so much."

Along with the new car, Gordon has also received an extended warranty, maintenance, and insurance. Thanks to the success of the fundraiser, the remaining money will be spent on Gordon's home for "much-needed repairs, which are to be done very soon."

"We need more Diannes," Officer Ivory said. $14,780 has been returned to its rightful owners, a young married couple.
